Maintenance
Respecting the limitations of a material is the foundation for its preservation.
New Teak
Teak furniture is an excellent choice for outdoor living and with regular maintenance will provide years of loyal service. Due to natural variations in the wood, each product and finish may vary slightly. When exposed to sun and rain, the color of the teak will soften to a silver-grey patina. This considered part of the teaks life cycle with many connoisseurs of teak actually preferring the silver patina as a symbol of originality.
Recycled Teak
We apply passion and skill in production - the kind that comes with ancient crafts and centuries-old skills handed down through generations. BackYard has perfected the art of crafting furniture from Recycled Teak, carefully selecting the wood prior to manufacture to ensure components are used in the most effective way. Recycled teak reacts in the same way as plantation teak when exposed to the elements and will thus provide you with longevity and a firm feeling of reliability when used outdoors. Teak will form a silver patina on the surface when it is exposed to the sun over time. This is perfectly normal and considered part of the teaks life cycle with many connoisseurs of teak actually preferring the silver patina as a symbol of originality.
Maintaining Teak
- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.
- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
- New teak will experience oil surfacing. These areas, which look like a water mark, can be removed by gentle washing.
- Avoid letting water stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions.
- When furniture is not in use for an extended period of time, protect it by covering or storing it. Before covering, furniture needs to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cushions should be removed and stored in a dry place if possible.
Eucalyptus Hardwood
Eucalyptus is a sustainable wood that is well suited to outdoor use. It doesn't have the same durability and longevity as teak but it is certainly a very good alternative for those looking for a more affordable product. Maintaining Eucalyptus is very much the same as maintaining teak however, we would recommend that you keep the Eucalyptus covered in poor weather and most definitely bring it indoors during the winter.
Wicker/Poly-Rattan
The resin wicker produced by S2dio has the enviable positon of being entirely maintenance free as it is based 100% on resin material with UV stabiliser for protection from the sun’s debilitating effects. The UV stabiliser will maintain the colour fastness of the fibres and the resin is impervious to moisture. Our wicker furniture will look good and perform well in even the harshest of climates by using the highest-quality man-made fibers for superb durability. Resin fibers are highly resistant to mildew, fading, sagging, staining, tearing and cracking.
Maintaining Wicker
- Use a dry, clean cloth to dust furniture weekly.

Aluminium
Aluminium is an ideal metal for outdoor use as it is strong but also lightweight. All S2dio aluminium is electrostatically coated with environmentally friendly paint which is toughened to minimise scratching and chipping. Aluminium does not rust so the furniture can be kept outside all year around and is corrosion resistant meaning that it will not rust, irrespective of how long it is kept outdoors. The result is furniture that’s virtually maintenance-free.
Maintaining Aluminium

- For spot cleaning, spray off any debris with a hose and brush off any dirt or debris with a soft-bristle brush. Spores that create mould and mildew thrive in environments with dirt and moisture. Dry with a soft cloth.
- Avoid hitting metal furniture pieces against one another and avoid dragging along the ground. On table tops, we recommend placemats to avoid scratches that can chip the finish and promote oxidization.
- Avoid letting water stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions.
- When furniture is not in use for an extended period of time, protect it by covering or storing it. Before covering, furniture needs to be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cushions should be removed and stored in a dry place if possible.
Cushions
The majority of S2dio's cushions are made from colourfast, Olefin material which is a hardy, water resistant, resin based fabric. We also use polyester fabric which is a natural material but in either event we always recommend storing cushions inside as the foam cores are not weather resistant. When your furniture is not in use for significant periods of time please place it under a form of shelter with careful attention to ensure both furniture and fabric are dry prior to storage.
